Siemens Healthineers and software developer Carna Health said Tuesday that they have formed a partnership to bring point-of-care chronic kidney disease testing to emerging markets.
Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will integrate Carna's artificial intelligence-derived chronic kidney disease platform with Siemens' global diagnostics infrastructure. They also plan to simplify chronic kidney disease workflows, improve on referral pathways, and help to provide timely nephrology care that improves patient outcomes and reduces healthcare costs.
Carna Health's digital health platform is used to help healthcare providers to identify and track chronic kidney disease.
Financial and other terms of the deal were not disclosed. The companies said that the agreement would help to improve the early detection and management of chronic kidney disease in high-risk and underserved populations.
"We have a shared commitment to expanding digital and diagnostic testing innovation access in regions around the world where such technologies have historically been limited," Bethany Costello, Siemens Healthineers' head of global strategy for point of care diagnostics, said in a statement.
Siemens and Carna are collaborating on a 30,000-person chronic kidney disease screening program in Bermuda and Cameroon using Carna's digital health platform with point-of-care estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) testing on Siemens' Epoc Blood Analysis System. Carna also plans to enroll 25 million individuals into chronic kidney disease screening programs globally by 2030 as well as expand into screening for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.
