Part I Status and progress

In 2021, there has been significant progress and development in all aspects of in vitro diagnostic (IVD) industry in China.

1. Global IVD market

According to data disclosed by IQVIA, the global IVD market was approximately $83 billion in 2020, representing a year-on-year growth of 29% in local currency compared to 2019.

By region, North America had the largest market share and the fastest growth at approximately $29 billion, up 41% YOY, accounting for approximately 35% of the global IVD market (Figure 1.1).

By product (the following growth rates in local currency):

The first segment was laboratory systems, which showed a decline for the first time in 2020. Blood test reagents decreased significantly.

The second segment was the Point of Care (POC) Test with a YOY growth of nearly 100% in 2020. In addition to the rapid testing business, strong growth in blood gas monitoring has enabled POC products to nearly double in 2020.

The third segment was the diabetes business, which declined slightly YOY. The increase in testing is due to the application of sensor technology. For the first time, sales of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) products exceeded that of Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM). It is expected that the CGM market will keep growing, the BGM market will continue to shrink, and the diabetes business in North America, Europe and Asia-pacific region will continue to decline.

The fourth segment was molecular diagnostics, which grew 216% YOY. COVID-19 nucleic acid testing reagents and supporting instruments have driven the explosive growth of the molecular detection market for infectious diseases with a market share of more than 60%.

The fifth segment included pathological histochemistry and next-generation sequencing (NGS). The pathological histochemistry declined due to COVID-19, but the performance of advanced staining reagents and electronic pathology was better than that of other segments of pathology. The NGS market declined due to the decrease in the number of patients.
