Samsung Medison has announced the completion of its acquisition of the French startup Sonio, a move that underscores the company's commitment to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into medical devices. The acquisition, finalized on August 30, marks a significant step in Samsung Medison's strategy to enhance the accessibility and accuracy of medical services globally.
Sonio, known for its expertise in ultrasound diagnostic reporting and AI diagnostic assistance, brings to the table its advanced AI solution “Detect,” which evaluates the quality of ultrasound images in real-time. This acquisition is part of Samsung Medison's broader strategy to secure leading-edge technology in medical devices and introduce solutions that leverage AI and IT.
A representative from Samsung Medison emphasized the company's focus on simplifying the workflow for medical professionals and innovating the accessibility and accuracy of medical services. "The acquisition of Sonio is a strategic decision to further strengthen this direction," the representative stated.
Yu Kyoo-tae, CEO of Samsung Medison, highlighted the potential impact of Sonio's AI solutions on global healthcare. "The Sonio AI solution will significantly help reduce the gap in areas lacking skilled medical professionals in image diagnostics, enabling the provision of high-quality medical services anywhere in the world," Yu said. "We will lead the innovation in the accessibility and accuracy of medical devices by combining Samsung's technology with Sonio's AI solutions."
Samsung Medison, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, has been a significant player in the medical technology industry since its founding in 1985. The company is renowned for integrating advanced technology into healthcare solutions, particularly in the field of ultrasound imaging systems. Ultrasound imaging is a crucial diagnostic tool used across various medical fields, and recent advancements have focused on improving image quality and diagnostic accuracy through AI integration.
The role of AI in healthcare has been transformative, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, streamlining workflows, and providing decision support. AI algorithms can analyze medical images, predict patient outcomes, and assist in personalized treatment plans, thereby mitigating human error and improving the efficiency of medical professionals.
Global healthcare disparities remain a pressing issue, with many regions lacking access to skilled medical professionals and advanced diagnostic tools. Innovations like AI-assisted ultrasound imaging can help bridge this gap by providing high-quality diagnostics in underserved areas. The acquisition of Sonio positions Samsung Medison to address these disparities by leveraging AI to deliver high-quality medical services globally.
